Book Review - Almost Heaven by Chris Fabry

“Almost Heaven” by Chris Fabry is a wonderful fiction book that takes place in a small town in West Virginia. The main character, Billy Allman, is just an average guy who has a sincere heart for God. Billy uses the God-given talents he has been given to live his life spreading the Good News to all who will hear. And while his life is dedicated to God, he does not have an “easy road” ahead of him – God gives him plenty of struggles to deal with along the way. But God also gives Billy a guardian angel to watch over him.
This book is written in a way that you feel as if you’re a part of the story. The book also shows you that God loves to use “normal” people to help accomplish His purposes. You don’t have to be the smartest, or the richest, or be the best speaker to be used by God. All you need is a sincere love for God and He will guide you along the way.
I highly recommend this book! I thought it was wonderfully written, hard to put down, and just an overall GREAT book! I’ve never read any of Chris Fabry’s books before, and this isn’t the kind of fiction book that I would normally read – but I can’t wait to read some of his other books – especially “June Bug” and “Dogwood.”

Book Review: Where Hearts are Free by Golden Keyes Parsons

“Where Hearts are Free” by Golden Keyes Parsons is a really great historical romance book! The book takes place in the late 1600’s in Philadelphia and the Schuylkill Valley in Pennsylvania. The two main characters, Bridget and Phillipe, fall in love. But because of their religious beliefs, their families do not approve. Then, Brigdet’s parents orchestrate her engagement to someone else. But this man has some not-so-great things from his past.

It took a little bit to “get into the book”, especially trying to figure who the characters were and how they were related (but this is Book 3 in a series, and I did not read Books 1 & 2.) After the initial start, I found this book hard to put down. While it was a typical romance book (the kind where you just know that the couple will eventually get together), it had plenty of twists, turns, and unexpected happenings. The author writes in a way that really makes you feel as if you’re “in the story.”

I was going to rate this book as a “5-star” book, however, since there were a few “graphic” scenes in the book (and I won’t let my 13-year-old daughter read it), I gave it 4 stars instead. I must state, though, that for the most part, the graphic scenes were important to the story line.

All in all, I really enjoyed this book…and I think I’m going to have to read Books 1 & 2 from the “Darkness to Light” series!!
