BOOK REVIEW: The Mockingbird Parables by Matt Litton

The Mockingbird Parables: Transforming Lives through the Power of Story by Matt Litton is based on the characters and events from the book “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. I must start off saying that I highly recommend this book! When I first started reading, I wasn’t sure if I would have to read “To Kill a Mockingbird” (since I haven’t read the book in a long time), but I soon realized that there was no need.

The author uses “parables” (i.e. short parts of the story) from “To Kill a Mockingbird” along with his own life stories and relates these parables to passages from the Bible, and in doing so, makes some good, down-to-earth points that everyone can relate to and think about. The main points of the book are loving our neighbors, building community, influencing society, having compassion, and being a good Christian (from the Bible’s standpoint – not the world’s.) Each chapter is broken down into smaller parts that are all based on the same theme.

Matt Litton uses short, yet to-the-point, stories about different aspects of Christ-like attitudes and behaviors that we should all strive to possess. I personally believe that everyone who reads this book will be able to find numerous aspects in their own lives that could use a little work, and be able to think of ways to make themselves more Christ-like.

This book is a great book, and I think it would make a good small group Bible study, also. (At the back of the book, there are a few questions to go along with each of the chapters.) The only things that I would change about the book are: add a few more Bible verses – and remove the word “freaking” (I personally don’t feel it belongs in a Christian-themed book.)

Yummy Wednesday ~ 9/22 ~ Vegetable Soup

EZ Vegetable Soup

Brown 1 pound of ground beef in a large pot and drain fat, if necessary.

Add to the browned ground beef the following:
-1 envelope Lipton Beefy Onion Soup mix
-1 (8 oz.) can tomato sauce
-1 (15 oz.) can diced tomatoes
-3 pounds frozen vegetables (I use mixed veggies, but you can use what you like)
-enough water to cover the veggies (or more if you like a lot of broth)
-1 Tbsp. sugar
-salt & pepper to taste

Stir together, and heat to boiling. Boil for 5-10 minutes...then reduce heat and let simmer (stirring occasionally) for about 45 min. to 1 hour.

ENJOY!

BOOK REVIEW: The Prophecy Answer Book by David Jeremiah

The Prophecy Answer Book by David Jeremiah is a small gift-sized book filled with lots of information. This book is written in a question and answer-style format and it covers most of the major prophecies from the Bible dealing with the End Times. The book is broken down into small “units” ranging from Current Events up to The New Heaven and the New Earth.

I really liked the Q&A format used in the book, as well as the fact that the answers were short and to the point. End Times prophecies can sometimes be hard to understand, however, I feel the author did a fairly good job of trying to make the answers to the prophecy questions “understandable”. I also think that this book covers almost all the questions that Christians (and non-Christians) may have about the Rapture, Tribulation, and Christ’s Second Coming. While David Jeremiah definitely has a “pre-Tribulation” viewpoint, I believe that others who don’t agree with the author’s point of view will still appreciate, and learn something from this book.

Overall, I would recommend The Prophecy Answer Book to others who are interested in learning more about prophecy and the End Times. The layout is easy-to-read, and I feel the book is packed full of information and Biblical references.
